About Redmine

Redmine is a free, open-source project management and issue tracking web application built on Ruby on Rails and released under the GNU GPL v2. It supports multiple projects, role-based access control, Gantt charts, per-project wikis and forums, time tracking, and integration with Git, Subversion, and other version control systems. Teams self-host it on their own servers, and the project has shipped regular releases since 2006, most recently the 7.0 line with native webhooks.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Completely free and open source with no user or project limits
  • Mature and actively maintained, with releases since 2006 and the 7.0 line shipped in 2026
  • Highly configurable trackers, workflows, roles, and custom fields
  • Built-in repository browsing links commits to issues for software teams
  • Large plugin ecosystem extends it with agile boards, CRM, helpdesk, and more
  • Self-hosting keeps all project data on your own infrastructure

Cons

  • Default interface looks dated compared to modern cloud tools
  • Self-hosting requires Ruby on Rails, database, and server administration skills
  • No official vendor support; help comes from the community or paid third-party hosts
  • Agile boards and advanced resource planning require plugins
  • Plugins can lag behind major releases, which can block upgrades
