About Suricata

Suricata is a free, open source network intrusion detection (IDS), intrusion prevention (IPS), and network security monitoring (NSM) engine developed by the non-profit Open Information Security Foundation (OISF). It inspects multi-gigabit traffic with a multi-threaded engine, matches it against signature rulesets such as Emerging Threats, and logs protocol metadata, files, and alerts as JSON for SIEM and analytics pipelines. It is used directly by security teams and embedded in many commercial firewalls and security products.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Completely free and open source, with the project owned by a non-profit committed to keeping it open
  • Multi-threaded engine handles multi-gigabit links on a single instance
  • Combines signature-based IDS/IPS with rich protocol logging and file extraction in one engine
  • EVE JSON output plugs straight into Elastic, Splunk, and other SIEM tools
  • Large ecosystem: embedded in commercial products and bundled in Security Onion, pfSense, and OPNsense
  • Active development with regular security releases and an annual SuriCon conference

Cons

  • No built-in GUI or dashboard; you need a separate stack such as Elastic, EveBox, or a SIEM to view alerts
  • Rule tuning takes ongoing effort to keep false positives and performance in check
  • Inline IPS deployment and high-throughput capture tuning require solid networking and Linux knowledge
  • Support is community-based unless you buy services from a third-party vendor
  • Rule-based detection misses novel threats that lack signatures

Key Features

IDS and IPS modes

Runs passively to alert on threats or inline to drop malicious traffic, using a full signature language that covers known threats, policy violations, and protocol anomalies.

Emerging Threats and Snort-style rulesets

Works with the Emerging Threats ruleset (open and Pro) and other rulesets, managed with the suricata-update tool.

Multi-threaded high performance

A single instance inspects multi-gigabit traffic, with AF_PACKET, PF_RING, DPDK-style capture, and hardware acceleration support from several vendors.

Automatic protocol detection

Identifies protocols such as HTTP, TLS, DNS, SMB, and others on any port and applies the matching parsing, detection, and logging logic, which helps surface malware and command-and-control channels.

Network security monitoring logs

Logs HTTP requests, DNS queries and responses, TLS handshakes and certificates, flows, and more, so the IDS doubles as a network metadata source.

File extraction

Extracts files transferred over the network, stores them to disk, and records hashes for later malware analysis.

EVE JSON output

Writes alerts, protocol records, and flow data to a single JSON event stream that integrates with Elastic, Splunk, Logstash, and other SIEMs.

Lua scripting

Lua 5.4 scripts, sandboxed in Suricata 8, extend detection and output beyond what the rule syntax can express.

Full PCAP capture and offline analysis

Records packet captures and replays existing PCAP files for forensic analysis and rule testing.

Experimental firewall mode

Suricata 8 adds a default-drop firewall mode driven by a formalized dialect of the rules language.

Best For

Network intrusion detection

Security teams deploy Suricata on a SPAN port or network tap to alert on exploits, malware traffic, and policy violations using Emerging Threats rules.

Inline intrusion prevention

Placed inline on a gateway or firewall, Suricata drops malicious packets in real time; pfSense and OPNsense users enable it as their IPS.

Network security monitoring and threat hunting

EVE JSON logs of DNS, HTTP, TLS, and flows give analysts searchable network metadata for investigations in Elastic or Splunk.

PCAP forensics and rule testing

Analysts replay packet captures through Suricata to investigate incidents or validate new detection rules before deploying them.

Embedding in security products

Vendors build Suricata into appliances, NDR platforms, and managed security services as their detection engine.
