Smartly.AI Review: Hands-On With Generative AI Chatbots for Customer Service

I spent two weeks building chatbots with Smartly.AI to see if its generative AI platform actually delivers for customer service teams. Here's what worked, what broke, and who should actually use it.

I get tired of AI chatbot reviews that are obviously written by someone who spent 15 minutes clicking around a demo. So I gave Smartly.AI two weeks, three real chatbot builds, and about $47 in API costs to figure out whether it deserves a spot on your shortlist.

Short answer: if you want a no-code generative AI platform with solid knowledge base ingestion and don't mind paying European SaaS prices,

Smartly.AI

is worth a serious look. But there are a few gotchas I wish someone had warned me about.

What Smartly.AI Actually Is

Smartly.AI is a French platform (yes, GDPR-native, which matters more than you think) that lets non-developers build generative AI chatbots trained on their own content. You upload docs, connect a website, or paste URLs, and it spins up a chatbot that answers questions using retrieval-augmented generation on top of GPT-4, Claude, or Mistral.

It competes in the same space as

and

, but with a different angle. Intercom is a full-stack customer messaging platform that happens to have AI. Tidio is a live chat + chatbot combo aimed at e-commerce. Smartly.AI is purpose-built for the generative AI chatbot use case and doesn't try to be your whole support stack.

That focus is either a feature or a bug depending on what you need.

My Testing Setup

I built three chatbots to stress-test the platform across real use cases:

  1. An internal HR bot fed a 42-page employee handbook PDF
  2. A product support bot trained on a SaaS knowledge base (~180 articles)
  3. A lead-qualification bot embedded on a landing page

Each one got at least 50 real questions from me, a couple of colleagues, and a small group of beta testers. I tracked accuracy, hallucination rate, time-to-deploy, and how often I wanted to throw my laptop out the window.

Setup and Onboarding: Surprisingly Fast

I had my first chatbot answering questions within 22 minutes of creating my account. That included uploading the PDF, configuring tone, testing 10 questions, and tweaking the system prompt.

The onboarding flow is opinionated in a good way. It walks you through:

  • Choosing a base LLM (GPT-4o, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Mistral Large)
  • Uploading or linking knowledge sources
  • Setting a persona and tone
  • Defining fallback behavior when the bot doesn't know something

The knowledge ingestion is where Smartly.AI genuinely shines. It chunked my 42-page HR PDF sensibly, preserved section headers, and handled tables reasonably well. Compare this to the six hours I once spent wrestling with a competitor's ingestion pipeline for a similar doc.

If you're evaluating options for a team without engineering resources, this is the kind of detail that saves weeks. For a broader look at options in this space, the

Accuracy and Hallucination Rate

This is the part everyone cares about, so let me be specific.

The HR Bot

Across 50 questions drawn directly from the handbook, the bot answered 46 correctly, punted on 3 (which is correct behavior when uncertain), and hallucinated once. The hallucination was subtle: it invented a "14-day bereavement leave" policy that didn't exist. The handbook said 5 days. I suspect the model pattern-matched from training data rather than the source.

That's concerning but not disqualifying. Every generative AI chatbot hallucinates occasionally. Smartly.AI lets you enable strict grounding mode, which forces the bot to cite the exact passage it's drawing from. With that turned on, the hallucination rate dropped to zero across 30 additional tests, but responses became more mechanical and less conversational.

The Product Support Bot

This one was harder because knowledge base articles often contradict each other (old vs. new features, deprecated flows, etc.). Smartly.AI handled this about as well as you'd expect: roughly 80% accuracy, with most errors being cases where it picked the wrong article rather than making things up.

The fix was adding metadata to articles and using Smartly.AI's source prioritization feature. That took another afternoon of cleanup, which is honest work you'd do for any RAG-based chatbot.

The Lead-Qualification Bot

Here Smartly.AI was excellent. Conversational, warm, asked good follow-ups, and captured emails without being pushy. For this use case I'd put it ahead of most live chat tools I've tested.

Pricing: The European Sticker Shock

Smartly.AI starts at around €79/month on the Starter plan and jumps to €249/month for the Business tier. Enterprise is quote-based. For comparison,

ranges from $39 to several hundred depending on seats.

Smartly.AI's pricing is on the premium end for what it does, and the usage metering (messages per month, knowledge sources, advanced features) can push you up a tier faster than you expect. If your chatbot gets traction, budget for the Business tier from day one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Smartly.AI better than ChatGPT for customer service?

ChatGPT is a consumer product. Smartly.AI is a platform for deploying chatbots trained on your content with guardrails, analytics, and integration points. They're not the same category. If you need a chatbot answering customer questions based on your knowledge base, Smartly.AI (or a similar platform) is the right tool. Plain ChatGPT isn't.

How does Smartly.AI compare to Intercom Fin?

Intercom
Intercom

AI-first customer service platform with Fin AI agent for instant resolutions

Starting at From $29/seat/month (annual). Fin AI costs $0.99/resolution. Three tiers: Essential, Advanced, Expert.

's Fin is deeply integrated into Intercom's messaging, ticketing, and CRM. If you're already on Intercom, Fin is almost certainly the better choice. Smartly.AI is a better fit if you want a standalone generative AI chatbot without committing to a full messaging platform.

Does Smartly.AI hallucinate?

Yes, occasionally. All generative AI chatbots do. In my testing, strict grounding mode eliminated hallucinations at the cost of some conversational warmth. For high-stakes use cases (healthcare, finance, legal), keep strict mode on and human-review the logs weekly.

Can non-technical teams use Smartly.AI?

Yes, and this is one of its strongest selling points. I onboarded a marketing ops colleague in under an hour and she built a working landing-page chatbot without touching code. For more no-code options, see our no-code chatbot builders guide.

What languages does Smartly.AI support?

Officially 30+ languages, with particularly strong performance in English, French, Spanish, and German. I tested French and English and both were solid. If you're targeting less common languages, test thoroughly with real users before committing.

Is Smartly.AI GDPR compliant?

Yes. As a French-headquartered company, it's built with European data protection in mind. Data residency in the EU is available on higher tiers. For US-only teams this might not matter. For anyone selling into Europe, it's a meaningful differentiator.

Should I pick Smartly.AI or build my own RAG chatbot?

If you have engineering resources and a technical reason to customize deeply (proprietary retrieval logic, unusual data formats, tight integration with internal tools), build your own. If you want a production chatbot running in a week, use Smartly.AI or a competitor. The build-vs-buy math almost always favors buy for the first 12 months.

The Bottom Line

After two weeks, my take is this: Smartly.AI is a well-built, focused generative AI chatbot platform that earns its price tag for teams that need a no-code solution with serious RAG capabilities. The knowledge ingestion is best-in-class, the UI respects your time, and GDPR-native hosting is a genuine advantage.

It's not the right choice if you're already deep in

But for mid-market teams building a serious customer service or lead-gen chatbot without an ML engineer on staff? Put Smartly.AI on your shortlist. Then run the same two-week test I did. That's the only review that'll actually tell you if it's the right fit.
